Creation Lake [2024, book #16]

The 16th, and last book I read in 2024 was ‘Creation Lake’ by Rachel Kushner. The book is “noir-tinged” espionage tale set in contemporary France. Disgraced FBI agent Sadie Smith is hired by a shadowy private firm to infiltrate an anarchist collective fighting a state-backed plan to divert groundwater for corporate agriculture. Although the premise sounds interesting, the story and the writing unfortunately are not. I struggled to plow through the book, filled with diatribes like long lectures on Neanderthals (not sure why and the Cagots. Nothing much happens in the novel until the vey end and by then it is much too late.
