How do you teach words like "Expressive" or "Gypsy" to a 6 year old?

While reading books together we'd often hit words that I don't quite know how to explain the meaning of. I know what it is but I often wonder how it can ever be explained because almost all explanations involve other words that aren't apparent to a young person. However, the kids still get it and amazingly enough - they learn more and more. There clearly is evidence of the sense of language being hardwired in our brains much like expressions of joy, fear and pain are.
