The Oxford English Dictionary lists at least 8 different meanings of the word "silly" that have been popular over the years. My kids use it to almost mean "funny". Growing up - it was just shy of "stupid".
Over the years the word morphed and lost much of its offensiveness. It may now even be something a grown-up may crave for. Such are the times.
