I got introduced this quite cocky band comprised of a duo -- a married couple -- about a year or so ago via National Public Radio. These guys are quite amazing in their chemistry and their music could appeal to a wide range of tastes. Alas these guys are not mainstream and their popularity is somewhat limited to the white-forty-and-above folks in rich boring neighborhoods like Morristown, NJ, where, incidentally, we went to see their concert. It was a quaint little coffee-shop, ‘Minstrel Coffee-house’ far off into New Jersey from where we are. Not a place easy to find but a pretty place indeed.
It was also a great retreat, albeit just for a few hours, from the concrete jungle and into the woods where the air was heavy with a perfect blend of melancholy and memory.
The couple started with the bouncy “Talk a little Texan to me” and went on to play what was not the best collection of their songs but was certainly representative. “Dysfunctional Duet” was probably their best performance of the night. Jacquie Manning played excellent guitar and a little drum like instrument from Ireland. She is eclectic and loves to tell little stories that range from funny to lengthy. She is clearly the energy and Rich Prezioso is clearly the laid back half that half sings his way through the apparent niceties of his other, clearly bigger, half.
What is most interesting about Small Potatoes is that they are funny and they are fun. Their music is brilliant and their songs are far reaching and exciting.
If you have not heard Small Potatoes’ music, it is definitely worth a try. Start with the album “Waltz of the Wallflowers” and then move on the “Time Flies” and then “Raw”. All great stuff.
