Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason

The first installment of the not-so-young not-so-thin London girl trying to find love and happiness against the odds was spontaneous, fun and funny. The second installment is a hodge-podge sitcom like assembly of contrived comic situations that make little sense in hindsight but are somewhat fun specially due to the potent one-lines once in a while.

Renee Zellweger is good. She has gained a tremendous amount of weight (and apparently lost it as well since then) for the role. However, she seems to overly stress the seeming grotesqueness of her frame rather than focus on her situation which was a part of her charm the first time around.

Both the male interests, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant play their parts handsomely. The fault is mainly of just the intentions of the production that has merely chosen this film as a vehicle to cash in some more on the popularity of the first film.
